Sofia Antinarella
Young and talented fashion designer Sofia Antinarella created this summer collection with a very particular technique. After taking the photos for it I got really interested in the process behind this project and had a talk about it with Sofia.
This is an amazing project! Where did the inspiration came from and why did you choose crochet as your technique?
The inspiration for this project actually came from a modern painting that I had saved on my phone for quite some time. It’s called “Veil Of Perfect Harmony” painted by Damien Hirst in 2017. The way those colors worked together, without having an actual organized pattern caught my attention and inspired me so for this collection. I’ve been crocheting for some time now, I was just waiting for the right project. It is such an interesting and maybe a little underrated technique and I love it. It just seemed the right technique to translate the painting into my designs.
What’s your thought on using wool for a summer collection?
Well of course using wool for a summer collection might not seem the right choice at first, but for this project I used a particular cotton wool, which is lighter and feels cooler on the body. In addition, since i crocheted most of my collection, the pieces are actually really airy and so ideal for the summer.
I assume that all these small circles are handmade. How long did this take and how many did you have to make?
Indeed they are all handmade, one by one, and then put together to form the outfits you see. It took months to create this collection, while I was working on other projects as well. I lost count of them, but there are for sure around 1000 of these small circles put together to create the outfits.
Are any of these outfits actually for sale?
Yes, sure! Keep in mind, that these outfits are all one of one, so the supply for this collection is really limited. If interested people can simply let me know on antinarellasofia@gmail.com.
Well thank you very much for your time and for showing me what’s actually behind such a big project.
Well thank you for this interview and these beautiful photos. Gladly again.
